Williamson papers, 1899-1940.

Typescript manuscripts and newspaper articles written by Williamson and others about Apache individuals, the military in Arizona, and Arizona pioneers. Personal correspondence includes letters from Thomas Cruse, J.H. McClintock, John A. Rockfellow, Will C. Barnes, and John Clum. Also included are handwritten reminiscences from Sandy Barrett, who drove a stage between San Antonio and El Paso. Photographs are of family members, Globe, Ariz. circa 1900, mining, and the Desert Rats (a group of old-timers including Jeff Milton, Frank Lockwood, and John Rockfellow).

Emmet Crawford was the second of four sons of William and Jemima Crawford of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (according to the 1850 U.S. Census). Charles was the eldest of the four brothers, followed by Emmet, Zachariah, and Henry, the youngest. John P. Clum was an Indian agent at the San Carlos Indian Reservation in southeast Arizona from 1874 to 1877. He later served as founder and editor of the Tombstone Epitaph newspaper, postmaster, and mayor of Tombstone, Arizona, as well as postal inspector and lecturer in Alaska. Army officer; Lieutenant assigned to 6th Cavalry in 1877. He served as commander of Indian scouts in the Apache country of Arizona and New Mexico taking part in campaigns that included the Victorio War of 1879-1880, Gen. Crook's expedition into the Sierra Madre in 1883, and the Geronimo Campaign of 1885-1886. He was responsible for delivering Gen. Mile's message to Geronimo and persuading him to surrender.
